Cullant on Android
Open an SD card or a connected camera straight from the phone, and cull the shoot before you are home.
Cullant on Android is the same app, with the keyboard replaced by touch. It is the only culling app that runs there at all, and the reason to want it is simple: the shoot can be culled on the journey home instead of at the desk.
Android 7.0 or later.
Open the card itself
Cullant asks Android for a folder through the system picker. Android hands it any storage it can see, and Cullant then reads that folder and every folder inside it.
That covers:
- An SD card in a USB-C reader. Plug it in, pick the card, and the DCIM folders come with it.
- A camera on a cable. Connect the body over USB and open its storage the same way.
- Any folder on the phone. Internal storage, a second card, or wherever your camera’s own app put the files.
Nothing is imported and nothing is copied to the phone. You are working on the card, exactly as you would at a desk. Cullant remembers the folder, so the next time you open the project it does not ask again.
What it can and cannot see
Cullant gets the one folder you handed it and nothing else. It has no access to your gallery, your camera app or the rest of the phone, and it has no network code at all.
Carry on at the desk
Every rating, flag, label and queued action lives in a small database inside the project folder. Put the card in your computer, open the same folder, and Cullant picks up where the train journey left off.
Working with a thumb
- An action bar along the bottom carries flags, stars, labels and reject, all in reach.
- Press and hold a photo to open a ring of quick actions around your finger. You choose what goes in each slot.
- Pinch to zoom in the loupe. Swipe and tap to move between frames.
The folder tree starts hidden on a narrow screen, to leave the grid the space it needs.
The back button
Back always steps back through Cullant: out of the loupe, out of compare, back to the grid, and only then out of the app. It does that even after Android has put the app to sleep and woken it again.
What a phone is worse at
- Judging critical focus. A phone screen at 100% is not a monitor. Leave the sharpness pass for later.
- Very long shoots. Decoding thousands of RAW previews is work, and a phone gets warm.
Neither affects correctness. The database is the same and the project opens on any machine.
