What to do when a photo is blank, a folder will not open, or a commit reports a conflict.
A photo is blank in the grid
Work through these in order.
Is it a HEIF? Then this machine has no decoder for it. On Windows, install the HEIF and HEVC
extensions from the Microsoft Store, or put ffmpeg 7.0 or later on your PATH. See

Is it a video? Install ffmpeg 7.0 or later. Version 6 is not enough.
Is it an older Panasonic .RAW? Those files hold no embedded preview. Nothing can be done
without a full decode, which is too slow to run over a shoot.
Is it a .DNG that looks soft rather than blank? Some bodies write a tiny preview. A Sigma
fp writes 8 KB and nothing larger.
In the first two cases, installing what was missing is enough. The picture appears the next time you look at that photo, with no rescan and no cache to clear.
Everything is blank
Check that the disk or card is still connected. Cullant probes the storage before it opens a project, but a card pulled out mid-session cannot be read.
If the storage is fine, rescan the project.
New files do not appear
Cullant sees the folder as it was when it last looked. Rescan by hand, or turn on the automatic rescan in the settings: 1, 5 or 15 minutes.
A pair is showing as two separate photos
They only group if they share a folder and a base name. A rename that touched one half, or a copy that put them in different folders, breaks that.
The pair sync dialog, under the view menu, puts them back together.
If they are grouped and you wanted them apart, that is mirror mode: press M, or Ctrl + J to release just that one shot.
The commit reported a conflict
Two usual causes:
- The destination already holds a file of that name. Choose another destination, or deal with the existing file.
- A file has moved or gone since the scan. Rescan the project and commit again.
Cullant reports these rather than guessing, so nothing is overwritten behind your back.
A rejected photo left a file behind
That should not happen, and it is the reason mirror mode groups any number of files rather than just two. If it does, the shot was probably decoupled. Check whether the file has a slightly different base name.
Please report it, with the file names.
An arrow key does nothing
A toolbar control has keyboard focus and is eating it. Click on the grid, or press Esc.
