Ratings, flags and labels
Three independent marks, what each is good at, and why a reject is special.
Cullant gives you three marks per shot. They do not overwrite each other, so a photo can be picked, rated four stars and labelled green all at once.
Flags (P, X, U)
Three states: pick, reject, or nothing. Flags are for the first pass, where the only question is whether a frame survives at all.

A reject is a queued delete
This is the one place where a mark does more than mark. Flagging a shot as a reject also queues a delete for it, so your rejects show up in the commit dialog without you doing anything else.
The two stay in step, in both directions:
- Flag a reject and the delete appears in the queue.
- Clear the flag, or set a star, and the delete disappears again.
- Unqueue the delete in the commit dialog and the reject flag clears.
Opening a project also reconciles this, so rejects you made before the queue existed are accounted for.
If you want a reject that is only a mark, use a colour label instead.
Stars (0 to 5)
Zero to five, the same scale every other tool uses. Stars are for the second pass, when the question stops being “does this survive” and starts being “how good is it”.
0 clears the rating.
Colour labels (6 to 9 and -)
Five labels: red, yellow, green, blue, purple. Cullant assigns them no meaning at all. That is yours to decide. Common uses are a client selection, an album pass, or a frame you want a second opinion on.
Pressing the same label key again removes it.
Task tags
Stars say how good a frame is. Task tags say what it needs. Make your own, such as retouch, trim, stabilise or send to client. Give each one a number, and apply it with T followed by that number.

Caps Lock, and how to fight it
Every one of the marks above is a classification key, and classification keys honour the auto-advance:
- Caps Lock on: applying a mark moves to the next photo
- Hold Shift: stay on this photo for one press
That inversion is what lets you set a star and a label on the same frame without turning Caps Lock off.
